Troubleshooting Iris
====================

Iris won't load to iconbar
--------------------------

DO NOT RUN AEMULOR - Iris needs more than 28/56 MB of RAM to load.
Generally speaking, Iris requires a computer with a minimum of
1 GB of free memory (RAM, not disc) and RISC OS 5.28+ (5.30+
recommended).

If Iris won't load, try running KillSOM obey file.
This will kill the "Shared Object Manager" which may be in use by
other programs, so be cautious. Killing the Shared Object Manager
will remove any old libraries from memory, allowing Iris to load
them fresh. This can help if either there has been a problem, or
an older version of Iris has been run accidentally.

Iris seems unstable or quits from iconbar
-----------------------------------------

On some OS builds, we have seen an odd issue where Iris quits /
fails the first 2 times it runs, then is fine on the third.
We can't reproduce this any more, suggesting it may have been
an issue with older Iris/modules or an older OS version. We
suggest contacting your supplier for OS updates if you suffer
this problem.

Iris 1.30+ uses the OS' new Abortable Dynamic Areas. The upside
is that by using official OS routines, Iris should be less likely
to crash the OS. However, these are new Dynamic Areas are not
currently compatible with Thumb2 code used in the Javascrpt JIT.
We strongly recommend that users go to Iris' Choices and turn
off the JIT if using Iris 1.30+ on RISC OS 5.30+. Don't forget
to Save afterwards.

Iris seems more stable if Alignment Exceptions are turned off.
To check this, double click on !Boot on your main drive, to
bring up the Configure screen. You should see a section called
"AlignEx", "Alignment" or "CPU". Click this, and make sure
that Alignment Exceptions are disabled, and (if given the
choice) your CPU is in ARMv7 mode.

Particular web site(s) cause Iris to crash
------------------------------------------

First, make sure to follow the steps above to ensure that Iris
is running as well as possible.

Next, close all windows and go to Iris' Choices window, and
go to "User Agent" and *double* click on another entry in the
list. For example, the first one afer "Default". This
facility allows Iris to pretend to be other browsers. Click
"Set" (or Save, ultimately) to apply the change.

Changing the User Agent requires you to open a new browser
window, which is why we recommended closing your existing ones
first. We have noticed that a number of complex sites behave
differently depending on the identified browser, so you may
see better/worse/different results with an alternate user agent.

If you've tried all of this, and Iris still fails, please note
down the URL and any login info (if not too personal) to allow
us to reproduce the problem.

General tip
-----------

The Obey file "CleanDBs" is included in this zip which will
remove outdated database files created by older versions of
Iris. The database code in some older versions could create
large or corrupt databases under certain circumstances. To
avoid these causing problems for newer (improved) vesions,
we recommend running CleanDBs when upgrading from older
versions.
