PDF handling in Iris
====================

As of Iris 1.030 onwards, Iris is able to render PDF files natively
without the need to use !PDF. Indeed, the PDF rendering in Iris often
exceeds !PDF and !PDFtest both in terms of quality and functionality
because it handles complex PDFs complete with Unicode font support.
Additionally it provides page thumbnails, bookmark support and copy/
paste functionality.

Using PDFs with Iris
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

PDFs can either be dragged to Iris' iconbar icon, or dragged into
its main window. We recommend ensuring that the files have the
expected &ADF PDF filetype.

You can also visit websites that link to PDFs, or even have embedded
PDFs within them.

Performance
=-=-=-=-=-=

The PDF engine in Iris is actually written in Javascript, which may
come as something of a surprise given its functionality and usability.

Note that we have found that enabling the JavaScript JIT in the
Choices window is beneficial when handling PDFs. As such, whilst
we normally recommend leaving it off for stability (ie. save your
settings with it turned off), enabling it (then click OK) before
loading a PDF seems to give faster performance.

Saving files
=-=-=-=-=-=-

When saving a PDF, use the button on the PDF viewer toolbar.
This will open a RISC OS save box, allowing you to drag-save the
file to your desired location.

Please note that if the original file didn't have a suitable file
extension, the saved file may not have a PDF icon. In such cases
we recommend manually setting the file's type (via the Filer menu)
to &ADF which is the PDF filetype.

Known limitations
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

The only significant limitation is that printing is not currently
possible.
